Prosperity Investment Management’s Mike Conway excelled at the 6 Hours of Monza to record his first victory of the 2021 WEC season in emphatic fashion.
The reigning WEC champion arrived in Monza with a brace of podium finishes to his name already but was eager to take to the top step.
After leading every session throughout the weekend, a dominant pole position for the #7 crew on Saturday pushed them one step closer to the rostrum.
During the early stages of the race, they battled with the sister TOYOTA GAZOO Racing machine for the lead, prevailing throughout.
A scare midway through the race, that saw the car shut down and stop at the side of the track, meant they lost a minute to the challenging #709 Glickenhaus behind but, undeterred, Mike and the team continued to push back.
Setting the fastest lap of the race during his stint, Mike battled on to take the car to the chequered flag a clear 60 seconds ahead of the second-placed #36 Alpine car. In taking the win, Mike has cut the sister #8’s championship lead to just eight points as the series gears up for the biggest race of the year: the 24 Hours of Le Mans on 21/22 August.
“It's great to get a win here in Monza because it's a great track and the fans were back as well,” Mike said. “The car felt solid all weekend and, as the weekend went on, it just kept getting better. In the race I am happy with the pace we had; we were able to pull away when we had to. At the end it was a bit touch and go obviously with the problem that Kamui had and also the puncture, but it didn't change the result, it just made it a bit more interesting. To come home with our first win of the season is great. It's a pity for the #8 car, they had a bruising day, but I'm really happy with the job we did on our car.”
